My Journey with Diabetes: The Power of Naturopathy and Self-Belief

2 Nov, 2023 / mvsblog

Body and mind have always intrigued me. However, as with many, my journey in understanding
and managing them has been filled with ups and downs. Here’s my story, and I hope it inspires
some of you to look at your health with a new perspective.

My College Years

During my school days, sports kept me fit, ensuring my weight was in check. But college brought with it a shift in focus towards learning and fun, inadvertently leading to an increase in weight. My mind was elsewhere, and my body’s changes didn’t catch my immediate attention.

Discovering Vedanta

As I delved into my professional life, long hours and immense effort became the norm. It was during this period that my boss introduced me to the discourse on Bhagavat Gita by J. Parthasarathy. An initial interest in Vedanta soon paralleled with social indulgences and unmindful eating, culminating in a diabetes diagnosis at 40. Weighing 105 kgs, I felt the weight of my neglect – both physically and mentally. But I wasn’t ready to give up. Six months of rigorous swimming and a diet of raw vegetables saw me drop to 82 kgs.

The Ups and Downs

For the first decade, I managed to keep medication at bay. Yet, a sudden feeling of fatigue and elevated HbA1c levels pushed me back into the realm of medicinal treatment. Physical activity, like mixed martial arts, swimming, and yoga, kept me going, but weight reduction became agonizingly slow. My average sugar level climbed, and my weight yo-yoed. Despite my efforts, I faced an uphill battle.

Discovering Naturopathy

News of the Delhi Chief Minister’s successful stint at Jindal wellness in Bangalore piqued my interest in naturopathy. It took a recommendation from a friend and some determination, but I finally made my way to RK Nature Cure in Coimbatore for a 10-day retreat.

The changes post-retreat were significant:

  • A weight reduction of 5kgs
  • Improved sugar levels (Fasting sugar at 120 and PB at 140)
  • A clear understanding of my body’s dietary needs
  • Confidence in reversing my diabetes

A structured day at the retreat, replete with yoga, health checks, individual meal plans, and daily naturopathy consultations, brought about a realization: we often get trapped in societal norms and neglect the signs our body gives us.

Conclusion

My journey has taught me the significance of understanding one’s body and exploring alternative therapies. We often mistake type 2 diabetes as just a lifestyle disease, but with the right approach and understanding, it’s possible to regain control. As I pen down my experiences two months post-retreat, I’m filled with hope and an invigorated sense of purpose.

Note: This article reflects my personal experience. Everyone’s journey with health is unique. Please consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your health regimen.
